Oslo, Norway-based browser specialist, Opera Software, said Tuesday that its Opera Devices SDK 10.15 for Linux has been selected by German television manufacturer, Loewe (founded in 1923 and claims to have generated 325 million Euros in sales last year), to enable Web browsing, interactive TV widgets and HbbTV implementation (note: HbbTV--short for "Hybrid Broadcast Broadband Television"--is a pan-European initiative that was launched last August and that describes its goal as "harmonizing the broadcast and broadband delivery of news, information and entertainment to the end-consumer through TV's and set-top boxes with an optional Web connection") on its connected TV's.
According to Opera, its connected TV solution is intended to serve as a "one-stop shop" for delivering content that is optimized for the TV screen. The company boasts that the solution offers "renowned speed, superior performance and steadfast devotion to Web standards," citing its support of such initiatives as HbbTV and the Open IPTV Forum. "We have made a promise to our customers to add value with every innovation, and today our customers are asking for connected TV's," Loewe's research and development director for software, Bernd Weickert, said in a prepared statement. "Opera is a clear winner when it comes to adding value to connected TV's, using the Web to enable new content and services on Loewe devices. For us, the ability to use Opera to create an HbbTV-compliant solution was crucial, as this is now the emerging standard for creating the interactive types of entertainment that TV viewers want." Added Opera CEO, Lars Boilesen: "When a customer takes on the Opera for Connected TVs solution, they get speed, unmatched performance and an innovative feature-set that results in a compelling TV experience. We are excited to be working with Loewe, a company with well-deserved industry recognition for its superior quality. Opera is well poised to exceed Loewe's quality expectations, giving Loewe TV owners the best that Web technology has to offer."
