--Will Offer Full Episode of "The Big C" from Exclusive Sponsor Showtime --Fox Business also Launches iPad App
TV Guide Digital (note: the company's assets include TVGuide.com and related programming guidance applications for iPhone and Android) said Monday that it has launched a free TV Guide App for iPad in the Apple App Store. According to the company--which says that its iPhone app has seen over 1.3 million installations--the new app, which is sponsored exclusively by Showtime Networks, features what it calls "social TV listings," as well as a day-by-day primetime schedule, entertainment news, photo galleries, original videos, and TVGuide.com's "signature" fall TV preview coverage. It was developed in collaboration with mobile broadcast technology specialist, Roundbox.
Among other things, the new iPad app incorporates Facebook and Twitter share buttons directly into its listings grid, allowing users to broadcast their viewing plans via their social networks. "Our iPad app makes it easier than ever for entertainment fans to share what they're watching--and when it's on--with their friends," TV Guide Digital general manager, Christy Tanner, said in a prepared statement. "We're delighted that Showtime is on board with us to launch this ideal second-screen entertainment companion, helping make this the best fall TV season yet."
According to TV Guide Digital, Showtime will be the first network to run a full-length episode in the new iPad app: an episode of the network's new original series, "The Big C," starring Laura Linney, is featured within the app's Fall Preview section, alongside interviews and preview videos for new and returning shows. Other features of the new app include the ability for users to keep lists of their favorite TV channels and shows, and to customize the app by zip code and pay-TV provider; the ability to browse listings for up to 14 days ahead; and the ability to search by show name, cast member, episode title and episode or program description.
In related news: Fox Business Network is set to launch an iPad app, according to a report by Peter Finocchiaro of Mobile Marketer. "From a trader's perspective, life at the terminal has all sorts of things going on," Jeff Misenti, VP and general manager of Fox News Digital, told Finocchiaro. "We're a channel talking about all that stuff, and now we have a medium with a device where viewers can play and act along. [We're aiming for] immersive devices and experiences that people can use not only on the go but also while watching the channel. This is baseline--we have grandiose plans to keep upgrading as the device improves."
