BT Vision to Launch VOD Service Devoted to Bollywood Content

UK incumbent telco, BT, said Thursday that it has signed a five-year exclusive agreement to carry a new subscription VOD service, called Bolly & Beyond, on BT Vision, its Microsoft Mediaroom-powered, interactive TV-enabled hybrid IPTV service (note: the service is enabled via a hybrid set-top box that allows viewers to access linear channels from the UK's free-to-air digital terrestrial platform, Freeview, alongside IP-delivered on-demand and interactive content).

The service, which is slated to launch later this month, will be priced at £6.85 per month and will feature Indian/South Asian movies ("Bollywood"), TV shows and music. It is a joint venture between distributor, MoMedia, and content aggregator, Shemaroo Entertainment. "We are delighted to be bringing a wide range of quality South Asian programs to BT Vision," BT Vision CEO, Marc Watson, said in a prepared statement. "Bollywood fans can now choose from an extensive library of TV and film and watch what they want, when they want it. This is a great addition to what is already the UK's biggest on-demand service for TV, film, kids, music and replay programs." Added Shemaroo Entertainment director, Jai Maroo: "We are delighted to be working exclusively with BT Vision on this brand new VOD service. With our large and diverse library of content and our strong relations with all the major content producers in India, we are excited to be providing a unique entertainment package to the South Asian communities residing in the UK. As a major content company we strive to innovate in the digital space."

In other BT Vision news: The service recently launched a promotion under which customers who subscribe to one of its gold, silver or bronze Value programming packages receive a 160GB BT Vision+ DVR. The promotion, which is available on BT's Web site, will last through September 18th.
