Zodiac PowerUp 2.5 Enables Interaction between Cable Set-Tops and Mobile and Internet Devices

Interactive TV software developer, Zodiac Interactive (note: the company's EBIF user agent is being deployed by MSO Cablevision--see the article published on itvt.com, November 5th), on Monday unveiled the latest version (2.5) of its PowerUp ITV framework, a cross-platform software that the company bills as unifying and enabling advanced interactive TV applications across multiple set-tops, including legacy boxes.

According to the company, PowerUp 2.5--which it says is available as a free upgrade to all existing PowerUp clients with current support agreements--allows mobile and Internet devices and applications to integrate and work directly with the set-top box. It exposes advanced API's, Zodiac says, that allow MSO's to establish and customize the communication between the set-top and mobile and Internet-connected devices. "The growth in mobile devices is igniting an explosion in mobile applications and changing consumer behavior, and we're excited to be in a position to further that growth by enhancing the interaction between the TV/set-top and mobile devices," Zodiac president, Mike Rivkin, said in a prepared statement. "We realized that we needed to expose set-top boxes that run PowerUp to other devices in the home. Therefore, with PowerUp 2.5, we are extending its reach into consumer Internet and mobile devices."

Zodiac says that it plans to demo PowerUp 2.5 publicly for the first time at the upcoming NCTA Cable Show in Los Angeles (May 11th-13th).
