Boxee to Launch Payment Platform for Content Providers This Summer

--Will Support Pay-Per-View and Subscription Models

In a posting on over-the-top-TV specialist Boxee's corporate blog, Wednesday, CEO Avner Ronen announced that the company plans to release a payment platform this summer that will allow users to purchase content "with one click on the remote." According to Ronen, the content partners the service will launch with (note: Ronen did not identify them) will offer shows, movies and channels that were previously unavailable to Boxee users, and will be able to package and price their content "as they wish," including offering it on a pay-per-view or subscription basis. In addition, Ronen said, content partners "will have the flexibility to decide what they make available, whether it's premium content, content from their existing library, or extras that will never make it 'on air.'"

According to Ronen--who cautioned that "details are still to be determined"--Boxee will charge a small fee for transactions that its new payment platform enables. The fee will be "lower than the 30% charged by many app stores," he added.

Ronen's blog post concluded by inviting content owners that are interested in being "one of our first launch partners" to "email to start a conversation."
