DirecTV Taps Entropic to Power New Set-Tops with Multiroom Viewing Capabilities

--Set-Tops Slated to Ship Later this Quarter

Fabless semiconductor company, Entropic Communications, announced Monday that its silicon has been selected by DirecTV for integration into a new line of set-top boxes that will offer new coax-based networking capabilities, including multi-room viewing. The new, HD "H-24 DVR" boxes (of which client and server versions will be offered) are currently in production, the company says, and will be in DirecTV customer homes starting later this quarter.

Entropic says that by adopting its technology, which is based on the Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) standard, DirecTV will soon enable its customers to easily share high-quality, high-definition digital entertainment and data throughout the home over existing coax cable infrastructure. This coax-based networking, the company says, will also enable DirecTV to propagate the RVU Remote User Interface technology on its platforms: RVU Remote User Interface technology is designed to ensure that the client set-top receivers in a multiroom DVR environment display the exact look-and-feel of the server on a pixel-accurate basis. "By integrating MoCA technology into our STB's along with the existing deployment of the Single Wire Multiswitch, we will set ourselves apart from the competition as a leading provider of connected home technology," DirecTV CTO, Romulo Pontual, said in a prepared statement. "This is part of our overall strategy to simplify the installation process and create a reliable video distribution system for our customers who want to enjoy a connected home lifestyle. Technology cooperation with Entropic was instrumental to expedite the delivery of these new STB's." Added Entropic CEO, Patrick Henry: "We are very excited to be working with DirecTV as multiroom viewing capabilities continue to drive next-generation home networking requirements. By leveraging our technology leadership and experience and expanding our relationship with DirecTV beyond channel-stacking for their Single Wire Multiswitch ODU's, we are enabling a new world of digital entertainment sharing applications for DirecTV's customers nationwide."
