Discovery Launches iPhone/iPod touch App for "Mythbusters"

Discovery Communications has launched an iPhone/iPod touch application for the cult Discovery Channel pop-science show, "Mythbusters" (note: the show, hosted by Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage, conducts experiments to test the validity of popular myths and urban legends; it claims to have tested over 700 myths via 2,300 experiments that saw it, among other things, setting off 711 explosions and destroying 104 vehicles).

According to Discovery, the new app, which is priced at $3.99 and which was developed in partnership with branded mobile application infrastructure specialist, Phunware, offers over 300 minutes of advertising-free, short-form video, including exclusive sneak peeks, outtakes and behind-the-scenes clips. It also features a social TV component, allowing users to chat live with other "Mythbusters" fans via Twitter and to connect to the show's Facebook community. Other features include the ability to access information on the show, such as cast bios and photos and the show's TV schedule; and three multi-level games that allow users to compete against other "Mythbusters" fans for the honor of being listed on a leaderboard. "Discovery Channel's 'Mythbusters' fans are among the most passionate, and we are thrilled to offer them a new on-the-go way to connect with the iconic series using iPhone and iPod touch," Todd Zander, Discovery Communications' VP of digital media distribution, said in a prepared statement. "Dedicated to satisfying curiosity, this app demonstrates Discovery's ongoing commitment to bring fans more opportunities to engage with their favorite shows and personalities anywhere."
