BBC Unveils its Red-Button Interactive TV Schedule through May 7th

The BBC has announced the line-up of content that will be available through its red-button interactive TV service through May 7th:

  • Throughout the ongoing UK general election campaign, BBC News is running a dedicated red-button multiscreen app, offering highlights of each day's campaigning and including both live and recorded coverage. On election night itself, the app will be expanded to a five-screen multiscreen on Virgin and Sky, but will have just two screens on Freeview. During the election campaign, the app will be available around the clock on Sky and Virgin, and will be available on Freeview overnight at the following times: April 19th-23rd, 12:00AM-7:30AM; April 24th, 12:00AM-4:40AM; April 25th, 12:00AM-3:40AM and 6:10AM-7:30AM; April 26th-May 5th, 12:00AM-7:30AM. On election night, it will be available on Sky and Virgin from 10:40PM through 12:00PM the next day; and on Freeview from 10:40PM through 8:45AM the next day. (Note: This red-button application is not available on the UK's free-to-air satellite platform, Freesat.)
  • On April 23rd and 30th and on May 7th, 9:55PM-midnight, Sky and Virgin viewers who are fans of the 80's-themed cop show, "Ashes to Ashes," can press red to access a selection of musical hits from 1983, presented by Gene Hunt. Freeview viewers can access this service 11:10PM-11:50PM, April 23rd; 11:10PM-11:50PM, April 30th; and 9:55PM-midnight, May 7th. (Note: Not available on Freesat.)
  • Starting April 26th and 27th respectively, Sky and Freeview viewers can press red to access BBC Red Button's "Bang Goes the Theory" quiz, which, according to the corporation, "is bubbling over with an explosive mix of video clips and embedded questions featuring experiments from the show." The quiz is available on Sky at the following times: April 26th, 7:00PM-5:00AM (27th); April 27th, 6:00AM-7:00PM and 10:30PM-5:00AM (28th); April 28th, 6:00AM-5:00AM (29th); April 29th, 6:00AM-5:00AM (30th); April 30th, 6:00AM-6:30PM and 9:30PM-5:00AM (1st); May 1st, 6:00AM-5:00AM (2nd); May 2nd, 6:00AM-12:00PM and 4:00PM-5:00AM (3rd); May 3rd, 6:00AM-4:00AM (4th). It is available on Freeview at the following times: April 27th, 6:00AM-7:00PM; April 28th, 6:00AM-5:00AM (29th); April 29th, 6:00AM-5:00AM (30th); April 30th, 6:00AM-6:30PM; May 1st, 6:00AM-5:00AM (2nd); May 3rd, 6:00AM-4:00AM (4th). (Note: Not available on Freesat or Virgin.)
  • During the April 17th (7:15PM-8:25PM) and 24th (7:05PM-8:10PM) and the May 1st (7:00PM-8:00PM) broadcasts of the BBC One talent show, "Over the Rainbow," in which Andrew Lloyd Webber and Graham Norton attempt to cast a Dorothy and a Toto for Lloyd Webber's West End production of "The Wizard of Oz," digital viewers on Sky and Virgin can press red to sing along. Freeview viewers can access the app during the show's May 1st broadcast. (Note: Not available on Freesat.)
  • The BBC is making supplemental content for its new comedy series, "Outnumbered," available through the red button. The content includes interviews with the show's stars, Hugh Dennis and Clare Skinner, and with its creators/writers/directors, Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin, as well as behind-the-scenes footage and extended scenes. On Sky, the content will be available at the following times: April 19th, 9:00PM-4:00AM (20th); April 20th, 10:30PM-4:00AM (21st); April 21st, 9:00PM-4:00AM (22nd); April 22nd, 9:55PM-4:00AM (23rd); April 23rd, 9:30PM-4:00AM (24th); April 24th-28th, 9:00PM-4:00AM; May 6th, 9:55PM-10:10PM; May 7th, 9:00PM-4:00AM (8th). On Virgin, it will be available at the following times: April 18th, 9:00PM-4:00AM; April 20th, 10:30PM-4:00AM (21st); April 21st, 9:00PM-4:00AM (22nd); April 22nd, 9:55PM-4:00AM (23rd); April 23rd, 9:30PM-4:00AM (24th); April 24th, 12:30AM-4:00AM and 9:00PM-4:00AM (25th); April 25th, 9:00PM-4:00AM (26th); April 27th-28th, 9:00PM-4:00AM; May 6th, 9:55PM-10:10PM; May 7th, 9:00PM-9:25PM; May 8th, 12:30AM-4:00AM.   • Following each episode of the new six-part BBC One psychological drama, "Luther," the corporation says Sky, Virgin and Freeview viewers will be able to press red to access "exclusive insights" into the "private thoughts" of the investigation team around which the show centers. According to the BBC, the exact times at which this red-button service will be available on each of the three platforms is still being determined. (Note: Not available on Freesat.)
  • During the week starting May 3rd (exact times TBD), viewers on all three digital platforms will be able to press red to access highlights from radio personality Terry Wogan's new Radio 2 show, "Weekend Wogan." (Note: Not available on Freesat.)
  • On April 24th and May 1st, 9:00AM-11:00AM, Sky and Virgin viewers will be able to press red to access a "visualization" of BBC Radio Five's "The Danny Baker Show." The visualization app presents viewers with video of Baker as he hosts his show, as well as text messages and pictures sent in by other viewers; access to a range of informational content, including the weekend's soccer tables, fixture lists, information on upcoming commentaries, sports news, and details of upcoming red-button content; and a range of what the BBC calls "unexpected content," including "spoof fixtures and unique animations as Danny sets up audience head-to-heads on the phone." (Note: Not available on Freeview and Freesat.)
  • Sky and Freeview viewers of the BBC's preschooler digital channel, CBeebies, can press red to access interactive TV games based on "In the Night Garden," "The Green Balloon Club" and other CBeebies shows. The offerings available to viewers on each of the two platforms are slightly different from each other--which, the BBC says "has enabled us to offer the best games tailored to each system." (Note: Not available on Virgin or Freesat.)
  • During the April 22nd and 29th and the May 6th broadcasts of the BBC One political panel talk show, "Question Time," viewers on all the UK's main four digital platforms will, as always, be able to view information on the show's panelists and discussion topics, as well as a selection of comments texted in by viewers, on Red Button page 155.
  • On weekdays, around the clock, Sky and Virgin viewers can press red to access Video Choice, a recently launched feature on the BBC News Multiscreen application. The feature consists of a two-minute package of highlights which is billed as featuring the day's best picture stories, and which is put together by BBC News's On Demand team. On weekends, the daily highlights package is replaced by a topical video interview, entitled "Five Minutes with...," or by "OddBox," a show described by the BBC as "a round-up of the week's weird and wonderful videos." (Note: Not available on Freeview or Freesat.)
  • Viewers on all the UK's major digital platforms can press red to access live coverage of World Championship Snooker (note: viewers on Sky, Virgin and Freesat will have a choice of tables; only one table will be available through Freeview). Coverage on Sky, Virgin and Freesat will be available at the following times: April 17th-21st, 10:00AM-11:00PM; April 22nd, 2:00PM-11:00PM; April 23rd-May 2nd, 10:00PM-11:00PM. Coverage on Freeview will be available at the following times: April 19th-21st, 10:00AM-11:00PM; April 22nd, 2:00PM-11:00PM; April 23rd, 10:00PM-11:00PM; April 24th, 10:00AM-2:00PM and 5:30PM-11:00PM; April 25th, 10:00AM-3:00PM and 6:30PM-11:00PM; April 26th-30th: 10:00AM-11:00PM; May 1st, 8:00PM-11:00PM.
  • May 3rd, 11:00PM-May 6th, 8:30AM, Viewers on Sky, Virgin and Freesat will also be able to press red to access a replay of the final frame of the Snooker World Championships. (Note: Not available on Freeview.)
  • In the run-up to the Barcelona Grand Prix (i.e. starting May 5th), Formula One motor racing fans on all the UK's four main digital platforms will be able to press red to access coverage of all on-track sessions, including Friday and Saturday practice and qualifying sessions. They will also be able to access re-runs of classic Grands Prix. Then, during the race itself, they will be able to access a choice of three streams featuring split-screen in-car camera feeds, leaderboards and rolling highlights, with the option of listening to either network or BBC Radio 5 Live commentary. Finally, after the race has been run, digital viewers will be able to access a post-race analysis show, and, the BBC says, highlights will probably also be available the following day.
  • On April 24th and May 1st (exact times TBD), digital viewers will be able to press red to access live coverage of qualifying for the Japan and Jerez Moto GP races respectively.
  • On April 25th, 11:00PM-10:00AM (26th), Sky, Virgin and Freeview viewers will be able to access a re-run of "Rugby League: The Super League Show." (Note: Not available on Freeview.)
  • On April 23rd, 7:00PM-9:00PM; April 25th, 2:00PM-4:00PM; and April 30th, 7:00PM-9:00PM, Sky, Virgin and Freesat viewers will be able to access live coverage of Magners League Scrum V rugby, complete with audio options. (Note: Not available on Freeview.)
  • On April 24th and May 1st, 2:30PM-6:00PM, Sky, Virgin and Freesat viewers can press red to access the weekend soccer results round-up show, "Final Score." And on April 20th and 27th, from 7:30PM, they can press red to access the midweek edition of the show (note: the midweek edition will also be available to Freeview viewers on April 20th).
  • On April 25th (1:05AM-8:30AM on Sky, Virgin and Freesat) and May 2nd (1:05AM-12:00PM on Sky, Virgin and Freesat; 7:45AM-9:45PM on Freeview), digital viewers can press red to access the soccer round-up show, "The Football League Show."
  • On April 24th, 6:00AM-10:00AM and April 30th, 6:00PM-8:30AM (1st) viewers on Sky, Virgin and Freesat can press red to access the soccer predictions and punditry show, "Friday Focus." (Note: Not available on Freeview.)
  • On May 2nd, 12:30PM-3:30PM, viewers on Sky, Virgin and Freesat can press red to access live soccer Championship coverage, with audio options. (Note: Not available on Freeview.)
  • On May 2nd, 12:30PM-3:30PM, viewers on Sky, Virgin and Freesat can press red to access live coverage of World Cup Diving. (Note: Not available on Freeview.)
  • On April 24th, 1:50PM-5:30PM; April 25th, 1:35PM-5:30PM; May 1st, 2:50PM-5:30PM; and May 2nd, 3:00PM-5:30PM (5:00PM-7:30PM on Freeview), digital viewers can press red to access live coverage of European Championship gymnastics.
  • On April 25th, 8:30AM-4:00PM and 7:00PM-6:00AM, viewers on Sky, Virgin and Freesat can press red to access live coverage of the men's and women's races of the London Marathon. In addition, a show entitled "Marathon Extra" will be available 2:00PM-3:00PM; and highlights will be available April 25th, 7:00PM-April 28th, 10:00AM. (Note: Not available on Freeview.)
  • On May 2nd, 10:50AM-5:00PM and May 3rd, 2:15PM-3:00PM, digital viewers will be able to press red to access live coverage of the Badminton Horse Trials.
  • On May 3rd, 6:30PM-10:00PM, Sky, Virgin and Freesat viewers will be able to press red to access BBC Radio 5live Sports Extra commentary for the Cricket: World Twenty20 event, complete with scorecards, stats and photos. (Note: Not available on Freeview) This coverage, and all the sports coverage listed above, is offered through the BBC Sport Multiscreen, a 24/7 red-button application that provides up to five screens of extra coverage as well as round-the-clock headlines.
