XStreamHD in Deal with EchoStar to Power its Satellite-Delivered HD Movies-on-Demand Service

XStreamHD, a company that is developing a satellite-delivered 1080p HD movies-on-demand service, said Tuesday that it has signed a long-term satellite service agreement with EchoStar's EchoStar Satellite Services subsidiary. XStreamHD says that it has been working with EchoStar for the past two years in order to complete operational testing of the transport technology that underlies its service: it is using capacity from the EchoStar-leased AMC-16 satellite, which is located at 85 degrees west longitude and which it says enables it to offer "exceptional coverage" across North America. According to the company, the new agreement will allow it to increase its capacity on the AMC-16 satellite as its transport needs grow over time.

XStreamHD claims to have patent-pending technology that allows it to deliver "a higher standard of digital entertainment that is equivalent to the quality of physical media." Utilizing fixed service satellite (FSS) capacity from the AMC-16 satellite, the company says, it transports multiple streams of "Pre-Fetched Entertainment" (PFE) to an XStreamHD Media Server at the subscriber's home. According to the company, with PFE, subscribers will have access to a customized storefront of movie titles that will automatically be placed in their Media Server's personal library, based on their unique user preference and distinct title selections. The company offers two equipment packages: the $399 XStreamHD Fast Start package and the $499 XStreamHD Pro package (which is billed as "the perfect package for hi-fi enthusiasts"). "EchoStar has been helpful throughout our development cycle as we perfected our patent-pending transport technology," XStreamHD president and CEO, George Gonzalez, said in a prepared statement. "Having completed a rigorous set of test protocols, we are excited to launch our advanced whole-home HD entertainment solution this summer. XStreamHD will introduce consumers to a new standard of quality and convenience, unlike any other digital entertainment service."
