Rovi in EPG Patent License Agreement with Liberty Global-Subsidiary, Unitymedia

Rovi (formerly Macrovision) and German cable operator, Unitymedia, said Tuesday that they have signed a multi-year license agreement for EPG patents owned by Rovi. According to the companies, the agreement provides Unitymedia with a license to Rovi's EPG patents for the operator's pay-TV services in Germany.

Unitymedia is the second-largest cable operator in Europe and is a subsidiary of Liberty Global. According to Rovi, the new deal builds on its existing relationships with a number of other Liberty Global subsidiaries, such as UPC Broadband. "The addition of Unitymedia to our patent program marks our continued momentum with leading operators worldwide," Samir Armaly, Rovi's SVP of licensing, said in a prepared statement. "This announcement highlights the importance that our intellectual property offers to service providers, especially as they look to bring technologies to their customers that help them navigate programming content."
