Vevo Launches Localized, Social Media-Enabled Music Video App for iPhone/iPod touch

Vevo, the music video joint venture between Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and Abu Dhabi Media, on Wednesday launched a free iPhone/iPod touch app for US and Canadian users.

According to Vevo, the new app--which it bills as "brought to you exclusively by our fine friends at AT&T"--allows users to:

  • access Vevo's entire catalog of 20,000 music videos from around 7,000 artists and bands;
  • enjoy such special features as exclusive videos, premieres, top charts, top playlists, artists on tour and original Vevo music programming;
  • create and save custom playlists for on-demand playback;
  • easily discover what videos are being watched in their neighborhood via Location Services/GPS;
  • stay up to date on video premieres and special events via push notification alerts;
  • answer relevant music trivia questions before watching each video;
  • share any video via Twitter, Facebook and email;
  • download songs from Vevo videos from the iTunes Store.

Vevo also says that the new app has been optimized for the iPhone 4.0's high-resolution Retina Display technology. To mark the app's launch, Vevo says it is debuting an original, interactive series, called "Ask:Reply!" According to the company, the series will feature musical artists answering questions that Vevo users have submitted via Twitter and Facebook. The first episode of the show, which features singer Kesha, is available exclusively within the new app: future episodes are slated to feature David Archuleta, Ciara, Civil Twilight, Fantasia, Grace Potter, JLS, Kelis, Maroon 5, Mike Posner, Miranda Cosgrove and We the Kings.
