Rovi Launches TV Listings App for iPad

--App Leverages Company's Recently Launched Rovi Media Cloud

Rovi on Tuesday unveiled Rovi What's On TV, a free TV listings app for the Apple iPad. The app, which features what Rovi calls a "graphic, rich magazine-style layout," lets users browse and search local TV listings for 24 hours ahead. In addition, the company says, it uses TV metadata available through API's in the Rovi Media Cloud (note: Rovi bills the latter, which it launched last month at CES, as a suite of entertainment services that are designed to enable rapid creation of new products, services and applications for "the connected consumer"; for more on Rovi Media Cloud, see the article published on, January 12th) to enable users to find detailed information and images from shows, movies and celebrities. It also features a social-TV element, allowing users to share what they are viewing via Twitter and email.

Once users have entered their ZIP code and pay-TV service provider's name in order to access relevant listings, Rovi says, they can:

  • Browse listings by time, channel or show line-up.

  • Find similar shows from within a show detail page.

  • Access detailed cast and celebrity pages.

  • Determine when, within the next 24 hours, shows they are searching for will be airing.

  • Check in and share their viewing plans with their Twitter followers.
