BBC Worldwide, Starz to Offer Interactive Companion App for "Torchwood: Miracle Day"

BBC Worldwide and Starz have announced an interactive iPhone/iPad/iPod touch companion app for "Torchwood: Miracle Day," the latest series of the "Doctor Who" spin-off, "Torchwood." Dubbed "Torchwood: Web of Lies," the app will feature 10 three-minute "motion comic narratives" with interactive gameplay elements that provide clues to "Torchwood: Miracle Day," the companies say. It is slated to be available for download on iTunes prior to Starz' July 8th premiere of the series; and, according to the companies, additional narratives and games will be available for download to the app following the broadcast of each week's episode.

BBC Worldwide and Starz are billing "Torchwood: Web of Lies" as an "episodic interactive experience...that fuses together motion comic and gameplay elements to tell an original and digitally exclusive 'Torchwood story." Users of the app will be able to take part in a "parallel storyline" to "Torchwood: Miracle Day" that includes lead characters, Captain Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper (voiced by John Barrowman and Eve Myles respectively). According to the companies, the app's storyline "reveals a past day in the lives of Captain Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper--a day they've both forgotten. The events of that day fuel a modern day conspiracy-laced treasure hunt, as Holly Mokri, voiced by Eliza Dushku ('Dollhouse,' 'Tru Calling,' 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer'), labors to uncover the secrets of Miracle Day," the companies' press materials continue. "Each week, a new episode unlocks, allowing players to access another piece of original motion comic narrative and game which ties into and extends plot developments of the show, as well as providing new twists in its own narrative."

While the app's first episode and game will be available free of charge, users will have to purchase the remaining nine installments in packs of three, each priced at $0.99 (users will also be able to purchase all 10 episodes for $2.99). "Torchwood: Web of Lies" is written by "Torchwood: Miracle Day" writers, Jane Espenson and Ryan Scott. The app's motion comic is produced by Double Barrel and the app itself is produced by Powerful Robot.
