Due to the large volume of news generated by the IFA, IBC and CEDIA trade shows--and because the [itvt] editorial team has been working on TVOT NYC Intensive 2011--we are covering stories in this issue in round-up/summary format. We anticipate that it will take us several days to catch up with all the recent news: so if your company has sent us a press release or briefed us on an announcement, and you don't yet see your news covered in this issue, please bear with us.

  • TV Genius--which was recently acquired by Red Bee Media (see the article published on itvt.com, August 11th)--has formed a partnership with international market research agency, GfK Media, which it says will enhance the relevance of its content-discovery platform by enabling it to draw on GfK Media's audience-research expertise. "GfK's business information services provide the essential knowledge that industry, retail, the healthcare service sectors and the media need in order to make their business decisions," TV Genius states in its press materials. "This unique partnership sees GfK Media integrate its research about the TV audience with TV Genius' Content Discovery Platform. Deployed by companies including BSkyB, ITV, and SESAstra, TV Genius makes it easy to keep television relevant while evolving with the rapidly changing TV marketplace." Said TV Genius general manager, Tom Weiss: "We understand that the way in which viewers watch television--their likes and dislikes, and their habits--varies in different countries and in different cultures. As a result of the combination of our highly relevant platform and GfK Media's market-specific data, operators no longer need to second-guess their consumers--they can understand their exact needs and desires. We're seeing an increasing number of global opportunities to bring relevant content discovery to operators seeking to deploy key differentiators in a crowded landscape. We're delighted to partner with GfK Media and look forward to developing more solutions together in the future." Added GfK chief marketing officer, Nick North: "We're seeing increasing interest from TV operators and media owners around the world in finding out more about what drives TV viewing, to understand audience engagement with video content, as well as measuring what they are watching. By combining data we collect about the audience with the relevance of the TV Genius platform, operators are now able to bring highly targeted content and recommendations to their consumers while avoiding any potential privacy issues. The power of the partnership between GfK Media and TV Genius enables operators to know more about their viewers than ever before, empowering them to provide truly personalized TV experiences."
  • TVGuide.com (which claims to have over 23 million unique users and 4.5 million mobile app installations) has launched a service called Social Power Rankings. "Social Power Rankings, the latest addition to TVGuide.com's portfolio of social-TV offerings, are a continuously updated feature highlighting the most social shows," the company states in its press materials. "Social Power Rankings also showcase the funniest and most provocative user comments, curated by TVGuide.com editors throughout each day. The rankings are compiled by tabulating social activity on TVGuide.com, including check-ins, comments, fan page actions, episode discussions, and Facebook and Twitter actions. Social Power Rankings are prominently featured on TVGuide.com's homepage in addition to its dedicated section...Social Power Rankings enable users to easily find where they can discuss a particular show or episode, right from the TVGuide.com homepage. The rankings join a suite of social features on TVGuide.com that include TV check-in, with over four million check-ins to date, and Watchlists, with over 325,000 created to date." Said Christy Tanner, general manager of TV Guide Digital: "TVGuide.com is the hub of social-TV activity, with our users and editors leading the conversation throughout the social Web. Social Power Rankings allow us to showcase our users' passionate debates about their favorite shows."
  • Verismo Networks, which offers an end-to-end platform that it bills as facilitating deployment of broadband video services by ISP's, telcos and other service providers, contacted [itvt] earlier this week to let us know about its IBC 2011 exhibit plans (Hall 13, Stand 354). The company is showcasing its cloud-based managed services, its IP set-top box and its media gateway. More detail on each of those offerings is available here.
