--Irdeto Launches "TV Everywhere" Solution with Social and Interactive TV Features

  • Irdeto on Wednesday launched what it bills as an end-to-end TV Everywhere solution, featuring a range of social and interactive TV capabilities and consisting of 1) a new "open-standards, cloud-based TV Services Platform complete with reference applications for tablets, smartphones and other iOS and Android devices"; and 2) the company's next-generation content-management solution, Irdeto MediaManager. "Optimizing the rich API functionality within Irdeto's broadband, STB middleware and dynamic security solutions, the Irdeto TV Services Platform provides operators and content providers with flexible Web services that deliver the right content, on the right devices, at the right time," the company states in its press materials. "The solution also enables operators to offer sophisticated social media engagement on companion devices through channels such as Facebook and Twitter, meaning consumers can share comments and recommendations that are synchronized to their viewing experience in real time. Offering search and recommendation, powered by Aprico Solutions, for a real-time personalized discovery experience, the Irdeto TV Services Platform distributes and synchronizes content on any device, breaking the content silo boundaries of VOD, PVR and linear TV. Bridging broadcast and broadband, the solution enables consumer access to the right content from any connected device, video bookmarking across devices and scheduling and programming via STB control on a companion device. In addition, the Irdeto suite of reference applications allows operators to deliver true engagement and interaction with content so that consumers can play along with their favorite TV programs and live sports games, compete against friends to share the experience, assemble communities around their favorite content and participate in real-time interactive polling, gaming and voting. It also means operators can synchronize the consumers' viewing experience with their social interaction on companion devices, which includes tapping into social networks on laptops and on mobile phones, commenting on blogs and forums, and chatting with friends in real time, capitalizing on a growing trend...The reference applications are offered as a white-label service or platform as a service for operators and third-party developers. They are supported by Irdeto's ecosystem of trusted application development and design partners including Accedo Broadband, DotScreen, Service2Media and Ex Machina, plus Irdeto also welcomes other partners to work with the company to propagate the solution. Supporting the Irdeto TV Services Platform, the Irdeto MediaManager content management solution enables operators to scale and monetize multiscreen services across new markets." Said Irdeto's EVP of digital TV, Doug Lowther: "In a competitive broadcast market, operators must be able to deploy a multiscreen strategy to engage customers, create loyalty and ensure their future survival.   • In other Irdeto news: 1) The company has announced that its ActiveCloak for Media solution has been expanded "to give pay media operators, content owners and CE manufacturers even greater flexibility in securing digital content inside and outside the home. With this expansion, Irdeto now secures any media application or device used to view content over the top (OTT) or via the home network," the company's press materials continue. "This includes any smartphone, tablet, PC, Mac, game console or smart TV across any operating system and DRM, opening new business opportunities for operators to increase customer loyalty and generate new revenue. Additionally, Irdeto [has] unveiled a turnkey, end-to-end offering pairing ActiveCloak for Media's dynamic device security with the advanced content-management capabilities of the Irdeto Broadband solution. This unique combination now gives both broadcast and OTT operators a single, studio-approved trusted partner for launching new multiscreen video services or replacing a solution they have outgrown." 2) The company has recently announced customer wins with MultiChoice Africa, Stofa and Televideocom.
  • International cable operator, Liberty Global, has announced the winners of its annual Vendor Awards. The award for "Best Innovation/Breakthrough Supplier" was split by 11 companies that contributed to the development of the operator's recently announced hybrid-TV platform, Horizon (for more on the latter, see the article published on itvt.com, September 8th): Samsung, NDS, Intel, Philips, Metrological, Celeno, Nagravision, Intellicore, ThinkAnalytics, eventIS (SeaChange International) and Red Bee Media. The award for "Best Account Management" went to Cisco; the award for "Best Product and Service Quality" went to Pace; and the award for "Best Support and After Sales" went to Arris.
