Redesigned iPad app for The Weather Channel Features interactive 3D images

-- TWC signs Westin Hotels to sponsor app

The Weather Channel launched a major upgrade for its app for the iPad, adding a 3D interactive globe with a spinning map view that allows users to track weather at various locations around the world.

The app, which was ranked Friday afternoon as the 12th most popular free app at Apple's iTunes Store, allows users to save up to 10 favorite locations. Users with an iPad 2 will see 3D background images on their home screen change to match local conditions. The app also contains a section with HD video submitted by users, in addition to video from programs on The Weather Channel.

TWC, which has expanded to Web and mobile platforms more aggressively than most cable networks, signed Westin Hotels & Resorts as the presenting sponsor for the app. Westin's logo is displayed on the top right hand corner of a user's iPad after the app is opened.

TWC is also one of the first cable networks to use automatic content recognition technology in mobile applications. A companion iPad app that TWC developed with Nielsen MediaSync which synchs content from its "From the Edge" program was a finalist at CTAM's "iTV Idol" competition earlier this month in New York.
