Time Warner Cable Launches TWC TV App for Android Tablets

-- App Turns Tablet into Remote Control; but doesn't Support Live Streaming

Time Warner Cable launched an app Tuesday that lets subscribers with the Samsung Galaxy or Motorola Xoom tablets to use the devices as a remote control and to set remote DVR recordings. But its TWC TV app doesn't allow subscribers to watch live video on the tablets – a feature the cable MSO already offers through apps it has developed for Apple's iPad and iPhone.

Time Warner Cable said the app is designed to work on any tablet that runs the Android 3.0 Honeycomb platform.

Time Warner Cable rival Verizon has offered its FiOS TV subscribers a similar app for more than a year. But the Verizon app is available on both Android tablets and mobile phones.

Look for Time Warner Cable to eventually add the capability for subscribers to stream live channels to Android devices when they are within their own homes. "We'll be making more improvements and adding features in the coming months," Time Warner Cable director of digital communications Jeff Simmermon wrote on the company blog Tuesday.
